Dr Geoffrey Oldfield is the senior cardiology consultant at GS Oldfield Cardiology, who remains at the fore in provision of cardiac investigation and treatment, including echocardiography, angioplasty and stenting. He is supported by a team of over 20, to provide better care of the patient, and better outcomes.
From the beginning of Dr Oldfields specialist training, Geoff has been an innovator, especially in the development of cardiac echo, ultrasound diagnostics and angiography, having established echo services in 1982 with Newcastle & Hunter Cardiac Services, before that at Royal Newcastle Hospital and cardiac catheterisation at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital in 1985. It’s perhaps in the relationship with general practitioners and physicians, however, that Geoff’s pioneering nature comes to the fore. "I’m available to my medical colleagues 24/7, because that means better care of the patient, and better outcomes!"
It’s this desire to achieve better patient outcomes that still drives Dr Oldfield. He attends and contributes to specialist cardiac conferences around the world, to assess the latest research so it can be applied as soon as possible to the care of his patients. Because of his skills and deep experience in both medical and interventional management of cardiac patients, Geoff brings a wide perspective on suggesting the right treatment for each individual patient.
His professional interests range from renal denervation in intractable hypertension, the medical and invasive management of heart disease, and the use of echocardiography in systolic and diastolic heart failure.
In cardiology, experience counts, and few can match Geoff Oldfield’s ‘hands-on’ understanding, having performed over 30,000 cardiac catheterisations, 4,000 angioplasties on patients and implanted more than 3,000 stents. His drive to keep in touch with the latest developments has taken him to many professional conclaves in the past three years; to cardiac ultrasound conferences at the Mayo Clinic, the meetings of the American Society of Echocardiography meeting in Hawaii, the Australian and New Zealand Cardiac Association annual conference in Surfers Paradise, the Congress of European Percutaneous Cardiovascular Intervention in Paris and AsiaPCR/SingLIVE in Singapore. He has completed studies in sleep medicine at the Woolcock Institute – University of Sydney and is certified in CT Coronary Angiography.
As he’s done throughout his career, Geoff Oldfield is expanding the treatment options and choices available to patients in Newcastle, the Hunter region and beyond by transferring to the new cardiac catheterisation laboratory at Lingard Private Hospital in Merewether. As well as two new Siemens cardiac cath labs, the expanded facility includes a dedicated 12-bed coronary care unit and a six-bed intensive care unit custom designed to meet the specific needs of cardiac patients.
In his spare time, Geoff Oldfield is a popular guest speaker in high demand with professional and ancillary organisations and is keen to assist Hunter region medical professionals to keep up to date with the latest developments in the treatment of heart disease.
