* The Cardiac Intensive Care was a 12 bed unit where all beds were capable of (i) ventilation and (ii) intra cardiac balloon pumping. In general, 4-6 patients were ventilated at any one time. It was used not only for arrythmias and IHD - ACS/cardiogenic shock, but also for acute rheumatic carditis with shock, heart failure in pregnancy with congenital/valvular disease, severe heart failure in preparation for transplantation

"Non-life-threatening" ACS were treated in High Dependency Units attached to each medical ward, a total of 48 such beds - fully monitored with daily cardiology consultation.

PERSONAL INITIAVES:

General Medical Registrar - performed an Epidemiological Study into Coeliac Disease within the Hunter Valley. This culminated in the formation of the Hunter Branch of the Coeliac Society of Australia.

Senior Professorial Registrar (Royal Newcastle Hospital) - established

  • a cardiac rehabilitation service, incorporating the Cardiology Unit, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Social Work Department of the Royal Newcastle Hospital (this was a broad ranging program aimed not only at post-infarct patients, but also at post-cardiac surgery patients transferred to the Hunter Region after surgery in Sydney.
  • "on demand" exercise stress testing and echocardiography services for the Royal Newcastle Hospital, which attracted referrals from Royal Newcastle Hospital in-patients and out­ patients, inpatients of other hospitals and private consultations.

1985

Consultant Cardiologist - established a Cardiac Catheterisation laboratory at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital - the first unit outside of the Sydney Metropolitan region (230 km)

2001

Established the first interventional catheterisation laboratory in a facility unassociated with cardiac surgery - PENDLEBURY CLINI - performing diagnostic catheterisation PTCA Coronary Atherectomy/rotablation PFO and PDA closure
